...fat bodies are political – we can’t pick and choose when we want to be political because people look at our bodies and see symbols. If you’ll indulge me in a semiotic discussion for just a minute, our bodies are signifiers to other people. The way they read our bodies is wrong and pretty much sick – and it emphasizes the way fatties are both dehumanized in general and divorced from their bodily identity in particular. It’s a whole lot easier to hate someone when you see a symbol for overconsumption, for greed, for ill health (which is still fucking wrong), for whatever than it is when you see a person.
